What Do Bed Bugs Eat?

A bed bug’s only meal is a blood meal. Bed bugs need blood to survive. Without having a blood meal bed bugs can not molt from their instar stage into later stages of their lives. Even though as adults, bed bugs can go without a blood meal for up to a whole year and still survive. Studies have shown that a bed bug can survive up to 360+ days without feeding on a host.

Why Do I Have Bed Bugs?

Any person in the world, no matter how good of hygiene is practiced, can get an infestation of bed bugs. Bed bugs can be picked up from numerous establishments such as hotels, already infested houses, airports, and even subways. Bed bugs will be found any place where humans frequent because humans are their host and they need their blood to survive.
Once you get a bed bug infestation it is very hard to eliminate the problem and prevent another infestation from occurring, unless proper steps for treatment are taken. The treatment for bed bugs is sometimes a two part treatment. One part of the treatment is heating your whole house to kill the bed bugs and the second part of the treatment is using residual pesticides to prevent future infestations from occurring.

What Are The Treatments For Bed Bugs?

The most effective way to eliminate any life stage of a bed bug is with heat. 100% mortality rate for bed bugs is achieved when a house is heated to 122 degrees or above for a minimum of 90 minutes. During the heat treatment, any heat sensitive items that may melt or warp will need to be removed; such as firearms, ammunition, vinyl blinds, vitamins, gel cap medicines, and make up. All infested linens from your bed such as sheets, fitted sheets, comforters, and bed skirts will need to be put in plastic bags and washed and dried.
Even though heat treatments are the best and most effective way to eliminate a current bed bug problem, these treatments do not offer any preventative for future infestations that may occur. Often chemical treatments are applied to a house to provide a residual protection and prevention of bed bugs infestations.
Some of the chemicals that are used to treat bed bugs are clothianidin, metofluthrin, bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, deltamethrin, dinotefuran, and beta-cyfluthrin. These are all registered chemicals for the treatment of bed bugs. Only trained and registered technicians should apply these chemicals to your home or place of business.
