Raccoons are adaptable mammals commonly found in wooded buffers, greenbelts, and residential neighborhoods throughout Herndon. They are primarily nocturnal and may seek shelter in attic spaces, crawlspaces, chimney voids, and under-deck areas.

Access to structures often occurs near rooflines, loose soffit panels, open vents, and uncapped chimney caps. Raccoons are strong climbers and may use downspouts, trellises, and nearby tree limbs to reach roof edges.

Activity often increases in late winter and early spring during denning periods, and again in late summer as juveniles begin exploring.
